Having a long history of more than 100 years, the Department of Ophthalmology of West China Hospital is one of the Key Disciplines of Ministry of Health and Sichuan Province. It is the largest ophthalmic center in West China, and its incorporating clinic, teaching, and technological research are all at advanced level in China. The department enjoys a great reputation worldwide.
The Department of Ophthalmology has 128 in-patient beds, 20 diagnostic chambers, 60 in-service employees, and more than 10 engaged retirees presently. It has more than 130000 out-patients, 4000 in-patients, and 5000 surgeries annually. Because of its active construction, abundant experiences, and advanced medical technology, the Department of Ophthalmology is capable of performing all types of internationally vulgate ophthalmic surgical operations, including implantation of intraocular lens, vitreoretinal surgery, keratorefractive surgery, corneal transplantation, surgery of glaucoma and ocular muscles, orthoraedic operation, and surgery of orbit and optical nerve. The operative techniques keep pace with the world, and the surgical effect is good. It is the first department performing photodynamic therapy on patients with ocular fundus diseases in China.
The Department of Ophthalmology provides with various advanced imported instruments, including the latest multiwavelength laser, excimer laser, dye laser, vitreous cutter, ultrasonic emulsification apparatus, Ceiss operating microscope (S-88 type), OCTOPUS campimeter (101 type), electrophysiological instrument, LUOLAN multi-focal electrophysiological instrument, HRT, HRF, and HRA fundus camera, A- and (or) B-type ultrasonograph, UBM, OCT, and PDT equipment etc.
As for the scientific research, the Department of Ophthalmology has taken on many research projects supported by the National Natural Science Fund and other national and provincial science funds. It has a Laboratory of Ocular Diseases which has mature technology in animal experiment, molecular biology, analysis of gene expression, in vitro cell cultivation, gene cloning and transgenes, analysis of gene mutation and research on ophthalmic drugs. Furthermore, the research on retinoblastoma genes, congenital retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy, retinal photic injury, research and treatment of glaucoma genes, pathology of amblyopia, molecular biology and genetics of ocular diseases have all reached national and international advanced level.
Being a mobile postdoctoral station and a famous spot for Doctoral degree and Master degree, the Department of Ophthalmology has staff of 4 tutors for Doctoral degree and 6 tutors for Master degree, which has been trained a host of excellent talents for the country.
